L-theanine is the amino acid in green tea often credited with the “calm alertness” tea drinkers describe. It has become a popular option for people whose body is tired but whose mind will not switch off.

What it is and how it feels

L-theanine occurs naturally in tea leaves. Unlike a sedative, it is not meant to knock you out — the reported effect is more like taking the edge off mental chatter while staying clear-headed. That is why it appears both in sleep formulas and in focus supplements.

What the research says

Studies are small but reasonably consistent for short-term effects on subjective relaxation and stress markers. Evidence that it directly improves sleep is weaker — most findings point to it helping people wind down rather than acting on sleep itself. We would rather say that plainly than dress it up.

Dosage and the caffeine pairing

Common doses are 100–200 mg. Taken in the evening, it is used for winding down. Taken with coffee in the morning, it is used to smooth out caffeine jitters — a pairing many people find more useful than either alone. Suntheanine® is a branded form used in much of the published research.

Safety notes

L-theanine is well tolerated and does not appear to cause dependence or morning grogginess. It may add to the effect of blood-pressure medication and sedatives. As always, check with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, nursing or taking medication.
